Dwight and Hawyard - Living Water Indoor Farm

It all started when Dwight Budden was gifted a countertop-style hydroponic garden for Christmas one year. He was fascinated by how it worked and used the concept to construct additional containers in his home. When he moved to Fogo Island, Newfoundland in Canada, to work at the world-renowned Fogo Island Inn, he saw there was a real lack of fresh, locally grown produce and was inspired to fill that need. Working with his father Hayward, he took that new knowledge in hydroponics and put it into action on a larger scale. As a result, Living Water Farm, an indoor, controlled-environment hydroponic farm was born.

Generally, the growing season and soil conditions in Newfoundland do not make traditional farming feasible so almost 90% of fresh produce has to be brought to the island. This makes the residents very reliant on outside suppliers. Living Water wanted to help the residents of the Northern Atlantic coast move towards food security and sustainability.

With Hydroponics, they could grow fresh produce year-round and supply Fogo Island and all of Newfoundland and Labrador. Growing a variety of lettuces, greens, and herbs including kale, turnip, rutabaga, cabbage, basil, parsley and cilantro, they sell their produce to local restaurants, grocery stores, and farmer’s markets throughout the region.

Growing the highest quality greens is always the goal and Masterblend is an important part of that mission. Dwight comments, “Since switching to Masterblend we have found that it is much easier for us to regulate our crops’ nutritional needs.” Additionally, they love that Masterblend is 100% soluble, “Masterblend dissolves completely and leaves our equipment clean and our plants healthier!”
